There is more to Matala than just its sandy shore. The history of the village dates back to ancient times, and its famous caves were used as homes for the hippies of the 60s by the likes of Joni Mitchell and Cat Stevens. You can still feel this free-spirited energy pulsing around today, as the waves crash against the caves and the laughter of the locals fill the air mixed with some scratchy rock and roll.

• Visit the Vai palm forest, the Toplou monastery, and the town of Sitia.
• Embark to Spinalonga Island, and visit the Lasithi plateau with Dikteon cave and the abandoned windmills.
• Visit Matala, the area of Zaros, the green valley of Amari, and the village of Spili.
• Rethymno town with its amazing Venetian alleys, the famous monastery of Arkadi, and Margarites ceramic village.
• Photo Safari to the South. The Preveli palm beach, Plakias, and Rodakino village, Frangokastello castle, Sfakia, Imbros gorge, and Kournas lake.
• Elafonisos and/or Balos beach (The blue lagoon).
• Chania town with its charming port, and the monasteries of the Akrotiri peninsula.
